Brownies to learn coding with new Google partnership

Brownies will have the opportunity to learn new digital skills like coding and working with algorithms as part of a partnership with Google.

Girlguiding, the UK charity behind the Brownies, is expanding an existing relationship with the tech giant with the aim of inspiring young girls and women to pursue technology interests.

The news comes after a survey by the charity found that more than half – 52 per cent – of girls believe that STEM is for boys.

The partnership will give 400,000 girls and young women access to co-created technology activities including app design, learning about chatbots, and designing phones.

“Technology is for everyone and can be made by anyone, which is why girls and young women should be able to pursue their interests in it, and have the opportunity to design and build the technology that impacts their lives,” said Nicole McWilliams, software engineering manager at Google. “We hope the digital skills activities we’ve created with Girlguiding will inspire even more girls to learn about technology in a fun way.”
