Amazon training ‘world’s largest’ AI model to rival ChatGPT

Amazon is investing in and training large language models (LLMs) to compete against Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, according to a report by Reuters.

People familiar with the matter told the newswire that the AI model, dubbed “Olympus”, has two trillion parameters which would make it one of the largest LLMs being trained. In contrast, ChatGPT has around one trillion parameters, the news agency estimates.

According to reports Rohit Prasad, who worked as head of Alexa and reports directly to Amazon’s chief executive Andy Jassy, is leading the project. Prasad, who is head scientist of artificial general intelligence at Amazon, is bringing together researchers from the Amazon science team to work on the model.

National Technology News has reached out to Amazon for comment.

The move comes after Amazon announced it was rolling out GenAI tools across its selling process.

In September, the retailer said it was using the technology help sellers write engaging product listings and help shoppers find what they are looking for.

The company has also launched an AI tool to improve customer reviews on its website and speed up decision-making for customers.

Last month, the news emerged that Google agreed to invest up to $2 billion in AI firm Anthropic to compete with Microsoft-backed Open AI.

Google will invest $500 million upfront with a further $1.5 billion over time. The company had already invested $300 million in Anthropic earlier this year.
