Ye no longer buying social media platform Parler

The disgraced rapper and fashion designer formerly known as Kanye West is no longer going through a deal to acquire right wing social media platform Parler.

Ye had agreed to acquire Twitter alternative Parler in October following a series of meetings with Candice Owens, the right wing US political pundit and wife of Parlement Technologies chief exec George Farmer.

The company however confirmed on Thursday that a deal which had been expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2022 would not go ahead, though it is not clear which party terminated the deal. The company stated: “This decision was made in the interest of both parties in mid-November. Parler will continue to pursue future opportunities for growth and the evolution of the platform for our vibrant community."

Parler initially launched in 2018 as a 'free-speech' alternative to Twitter. It was subsequently removed from Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store after the app, which is largely dominated by MAGA Republicans, was found to be central to co-ordinating the failed insurrection on January 6 2021. It has more recently been readded to the app stores.

The controversialist Ye has also been suspended on Twitter two months after he had previously been kicked off the platform for posting a series of anti-semetic tweets which the platform’s owner Elon Musk said "violated our rule against incitement to violence".

Ye was initially banned in October after tweeting that he was going “death con [sic] 3 on Jewish people,” but was allowed to return to the platform after Musk completed his $44 billion takeover.

The rapper, who has a history of unsubstantiated and provocative statements such as ‘slavery was a choice’, has spent the past several months doubling down on this anti-semtic rhetoric and on Thursday night appeared on conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ podcast. During an appearance where he wore a full-face balaclava, Ye repeatedly praised Adolf Hitler, Nazis and continued to make baseless claims about Jewish people.
