UK pharmaceutical industry 'welcomes' government science framework

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has welcomed the UK government’s new science and technology framework.

The new framework outlines the government’s aims to make the UK a “science and technology superpower” by 2030.

Steps the government intends to take include financing science and technology startups and boosting private and public investment in research and development.

Richard Torbett, chief executive at the ABPI, has welcomed the new framework and believes it can help to deliver on the government’s ambitions for UK science.

“The pharmaceutical industry alone invests more than any other in UK R&D and life sciences delivers exports worth around £30bn annually alongside a combined total of £32 billion GVA,” he said. “Making sure the UK has the right skills, data infrastructure and regulatory frameworks in place will also be critical factors.”

Torbett went on to refer to the ABPI’s recently published set of proposals for how a new voluntary scheme between government and the pharmaceutical industry could help to further develop the UK’s life sciences sector.

The ABPI said its proposals would deliver a sustainable approach to medicines provision while also maximising the potential of the UK life sciences industry as an engine for growth.

Torbett said: “Not only do these proposals support the goals set out in today’s framework, but they also underpin the delivery of the life sciences vision.”
