UK government leads £50m GreenTech grant funds

The government has awarded funding grants totalling £50 million to over 30 “cutting-edge” manufacturing projects.

The grant winners include self-driving car and rapid-charging motorcycle projects, which the government said would further the UK’s aims at innovating in clean, green technologies and in turn help to create jobs and grow the economy.

£11 million of government grant funding has come through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) and being awarded to 12 projects aiming to accelerate product development of vehicles such as motorcycles and buses.

The provision of industry match-funding means these projects will receive a total of £22 million to develop innovative automotive products within 12 months, the government said.

The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) is also providing £18.5 million of R&D grant funding for 43 British companies, while the remainder of the £50 million figure came from a £19 million grant from the Faraday Institution towards four battery research projects.

“We are providing over £50 million of government funding to support 30 groundbreaking projects,” said industry and economic security minister Nusrat Ghani. “This government has shown time and time again that we are committed to creating the right conditions to make the UK the best location in the world to manufacture.”
