UK government launches independent semiconductor institute

The UK government has created an independent institute to support and grow the UK semiconductor industry.

The government said that its new UK Semiconductor Institute will ensure that chip researchers have the tools and infrastructure they need to convert their research into products ready to go to market.

Additionally, the institute will act as a facilitator for technology business and international partners who want to work with the UK semiconductor industry for research and innovation.

The launch of the institute builds on the government’s £1 billion National Semiconductor strategy.

The institute will focus on developing areas identified as British strengths by the National Semiconductor Strategy, which include compound chips, design and research and development.

Commenting on the news, technology minister Saqib Bhatti noted that semiconductors underpin a range of technology, adding that the institute will grow the sector as well as make it “more resilient”.

“Building on the early success of the strategy, the UK Semiconductor Institute will unify the semiconductor sector to focus our talented researchers on securing our status at the cutting edge of semiconductor science,” he added. “This is a hugely significant milestone on our journey to becoming a science and tech superpower by 2030.”
