Sony ‘plans to explore’ EV market

Sony is reportedly planning to establish a business this year that will explore a potential move into the electric vehicle (EV) industry.

A report by Reuters revealed that the new company will be called ‘Sony Mobility’ and that it would use Sony’s sensor and entertainment abilities to become a player in the future of mobility.

Sony’s chairman and president Kenichiro Yoshida told a news conference that the business is looking into a commercial launch of EVs, according to the news agency.

"With our imaging and sensing, cloud, 5G and entertainment technologies combined with our contents mastery, we believe Sony is well positioned as a creative entertainment company to redefine mobility," Yoshida told the conference.

The report said that shares in the business increased by 4.2 per cent in Tokyo following the announcement of the plans.
