Nesta launches £50m fund for tech start-ups

Nesta Impact Investments has announced a new £50 million investment strategy to support early-stage technology businesses that deliver “strong social and environmental impact”.

The investment arm of the UK-based investment agency Nesta said it has allocated over £25 million of the funding to invest directly in early-stage startups over the next five years.

The remaining funds will be used to continue supporting the growth of Mission Studio, a partnership between Nesta and Founders Factory which provides initial investments to mission-led startups.

Nesta said it will be making investments of between £500,000 and £1 million in seed and Series A stage startups, with the ability to invest up to £4 million over multiple rounds with plans to make between five and ten investments per year.

“We believe that being purpose-led and creating a scalable tech company can go hand-in-hand, as long as the right support is in place,” said Lisa Barclay, executive director of Nesta Impact Investments

She continued: “Whether it’s tapping into the research expertise of our Nesta colleagues, leveraging our understanding of the policy landscape, or ensuring founders can build the right networks, our team and the wider Nesta organisation do everything we can to help founders thrive whilst staying true to their social or environmental goals.”
