Meta could rival Twitter with new ‘decentralised social platform’

Meta is reportedly exploring a decentralised social network for sharing text updates.

In a statement issued on Friday, a Meta spokesperson told Reuters: "We're exploring a standalone decentralised social network for sharing text updates. We believe there's an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests," a Meta spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement."

Announcement of the proposed social network, which sounds a lot like the format of Twitter, comes days after staff at Twitter claimed that layoffs at the company have left users exposed to child sexual exploitation, trolling, and disinformation.

If Meta were to launch a rival platform to Twitter it would come at a time when the company has seen it haemorrhage both users and support from advertisers, as well as roll out thousands of job cuts.

Insiders told the BBC that methods designed to protect users are becoming hard to maintain following the axing of around half of its global workforce.

Twitter cut roughly 7,500 employees in October following Elon Musk's highly publicised takeover of the company. It has also been reported that Twitter has cut a further 2,000 staff members.

Since Musk's buyout of the company and subsequent job cuts, the platform has also suffered a number of outages.

In December, Twitter’s billionaire owner Elon Musk confirmed plans to step down as boss of the social media platform following a poll in which users overwhelmingly voted to oust the chief executive.

Musk posted: "I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I will just run the software & servers teams.”
