MGM Resorts says it has recovered from Scattered Spider cyberattack

MGM Resorts has recovered from a major cyberattack which impacted its 30 hotels and casinos across the world.

The group was targeted by a hacking group named Scattered Spider, Reuters reports, with the social engineering-led attack leading to mass outages across MGM’s hotels and casinos. This ranged from issues with check-in systems to dysfunctional slot machines over the course of a week.

The outages were widely reported across social media, with videos emerging of long queues at MGM’s Las Vegas locations.

The luxury sprawling Excalibur hotel and casino in Las Vegas still faces issues with digital room keys and mobile check-in.

In a statement, MGM Resorts said: "Guests at Excalibur may continue to see casino cashiers and slot guest representatives as we work to normalise operations.

"Our slot machine ticket-in/ticket-out systems are back up and running, and our casino cashiers and slot guest service representatives are happy to help guests who may experience intermittent issues.”

The Scattered Spider hacking group has proved to be very effective and has hit telecom and business process outsourcing companies in the past, along with critical infrastructure organisations.
