Leading women in tech speak out to address gender gap

Some of the most influential women in tech are speaking out to help overcome gender bias in the industry.

Code First Girls, which aims to close the tech industry gender gap by providing employment through free coding education, is releasing a new interview with a leading woman in tech via its YouTube channel every two weeks.

The move comes as new analysis from the organisation reveals that by 2025 there will be just one qualified woman for every 115 roles in technology.

Other research shows that women make up only 21 per cent of the UK’s tech industry, with black woman making up only three per cent of the technology workforce.

Nike’s global senior director, Innovation Marketplace Studio, Rosie Hawke, said her key advice for women looking to get into tech is to be bold and curious.

“The essential skill is to be able to give yourself enough time to rest and recover – to look at work patiently but to ensure that each week you’re taking time for yourself, whether that’s spending time with children or family, learning a new skill, or doing sports,” said Hawke in an interview with Code First Girls. “It’s a bit like an athlete. If you’re constantly training and on-the-go, it’s very hard to perform. A big part of being able to juggle different things is being able to take some time out and give yourself a break.”
