Instagram & Yoti to trial new age verification methods

Instagram is starting to test out new ways of verifying age on its platform.

The social media platform is also partnering with online verification specialist Yoti to assist with its aims.

Starting with trials in the US, if a user attempts to modify their age on the platform from under to over 18, Instagram will require them to verify their age using one of several options.

The trial will encompass three age verification options.

Users can upload a copy of their ID, have mutual followers aged 18 or over verify them, or record a video selfie.

In the video selfie scenario, Instagram will share the upload with partner Yoti, who will use their technology to estimate a user’s age based on their facial features and share that estimate with Instagram.

Instagram has stated that any data obtained to verify users’ ages will be deleted within 30 days.
