Hackers target Army's Twitter and YouTube accounts

The British Army is carrying out an investigation after its Twitter and YouTube accounts were hacked over the weekend.

On Sunday, the Army apologised for temporary interruption resulting from the breach that impacted its Twitter feed.

According to a report by the BBC, the Twitter account was renamed to ‘Bapesclan’ and its profile picture was changed to an image of an ape-like cartoon wearing clown make-up.

The Ministry of Defence said that the Army “takes information security extremely seriously”, adding that until its investigation is over it would be “inappropriate” to comment further.

The Army did not say who might be behind the attack.

Tobias Ellwood MP, chair of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, said that the breach looked "serious".

“I hope the results of the investigation and actions taken will be shared appropriately," he said in Tweet.
