Google opens second cloud region in Italy

Google has confirmed the launch of its second cloud region in Italy.

In a blog post, the Alphabet-owned company said that the new Google Cloud region in Turin would complement the recently opened Milan region to “provide highly available and sustainable cloud services with data sovereignty and residency functionality to meet the needs of the Italian economy”.

The new region launches with three cloud zones and Google Cloud standard services including Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Persistent Disk, CloudSQL, Cloud Identity, and others.

The company added that the new region would help accelerate the digitisation of local companies, public administrations and global organisations. Citing an independent study from the Digital Innovation Observatories and the Energy & Strategy group of the Milan Politecnico, Google said that its cloud expansion efforts would generate a new market for partners estimated at over €1.9 billion through to 2025.

Commenting on the launch, Enrico Bagnasco, executive director Information Systems of Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo, said: "With the availability of the Turin Google Cloud region, that follows the one of Milan, the path that will allow Intesa Sanpaolo to fully exploit the potential of cloud technology and further accelerate the process of digitisation of its services, is completed.”

Elio Schiavo, chief enterprise and innovative solutions officer of leading telco TIM said: “The two regions represent an important result for this collaboration and are a distinctive asset that enables the offering of low latency, connectivity and data sovereignty functionalities.”
