German cartel office drops proceedings against Google news service

Germany’s cartel office has finished proceedings against Google’s online news service, after the company made changes to benefit publishers.

According to reports from Reuters, Google will not integrate the Google News Showcase into searches as planned and has changed its methods to make sure publishers do not have difficulties in upholding their copyright.

Google will implement further measures in the coming weeks, including providing more information about the Google News Showcase, and Reuters said the cartel office would continue to monitor the technology firm.

This follows the news that Google’s parent company Alphabet has announced a $13 million grant to address misinformation. Fact checking organisations will be able to use this funding to incorporate new technologies, improve verification and provide better audience engagement.
