EG Group to buy and install Tesla EV chargers

Service station forecourt operator EG Group has announced a deal to buy ultra-fast charging units from Tesla to expand its electric vehicle charging network across Europe.

The company, in the middle of an ambitious plan to expand its network from 600 chargers currently deployed to more than 20,000, said that the chargers will be 'open network', meaning that any EV can use them.

Tesla has previously been criticised for building out a network of high-speed EV charging points that can only be used by its own vehicles.

EG Group, which is run by Asda owners Mohsin and Zuber Issa and sold its UK business to the supermarket chain in October, will start installing the first charger units before the end of the year, it said.

Zuber Issa CBE, founder and co-chief executive of EG Group, said: “Securing this best-in-class equipment from Tesla marks another milestone for evpoint and is hugely exciting for us. It is the first deal of its kind entered into by Tesla with a third-party charge point operator in Europe and will transform how our customers charge their vehicles and how they interact with EG.

“Since installing our first EV charger back in 2012, we have continued to invest in the technology. This deal will accelerate the delivery of vital charging infrastructure for motorists to help power the transition to Net Zero.”
