British space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock given own Barbie doll

UK space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been honoured with her own Barbie doll to celebrate International Women’s Day, which takes place on Wednesday.

54-year-old Aderin-Pocock is known for presenting BBC Four’s Sky at Night and has authored several space-related books.

Mattel, the developer of the iconic dolls, said that access to successful female role models in STEM is essential for children to build an interest in the industry.

According to the United States Census Bureau, women make up less than one-third of the STEM.

Further research from the American Association of University Women suggest that girls are often actively discouraged from STEM subjects throughout their education.

“Barbie is dedicated to showcasing women who are role models from all backgrounds, professions, and nationalities so that girls around the world can see themselves in careers that might not always seem as accessible,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel. “STEM is a field where women are severely underrepresented, and our hope is that honouring these seven leaders in science and technology will encourage girls to follow their passion in this field.”

Other scientists that have been honoured with a Barbie doll in their honour include:

• Susan Wojcicki (United States): Longtime YouTube chief executive
• Anne Wojcicki (United States): co- founder and chief executive of 23andME
• Janet Wojcicki (United States):  professor of paediatrics and epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco
• Katya Echazarreta (Mexico): electrical engineer and science show host
• Prof Dr Antje Boetius (DE): marine researcher and microbiologist
• Yinuo Li (China): co-founder of ETU Education
