Apple ‘lays of 600 staff’ after axing smartwatch screens and electric cars

Apple has reportedly axed more than 600 roles after deciding to wind down its smartwatch display and car projects.

Last year it was reported that the tech giant would start using in-house displays for its mobile devices, starting with its Apple watches. But according to Bloomberg, the company began shutting down the project at the end of February.

After years of speculation, Apple also cancelled work on its planned electric car.

The decade-long effort was one of the most ambitious plans in the iPhone maker’s history, but the decision was made in a memo sent by vice president of technology Kevin Lynch and chief operating officer Jeff Williams.

On Friday, Bloomberg revealed the job cuts after viewing eight separate reports which were filled by Apple to the California Employment Development Department.

The publication said that at least 87 of the people losing their jobs previously worked at a secret Apple facility for its screen development, with the other employees based at locations linked to its car project.
