Anthropic expands Claude into healthcare as OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Health

Anthropic has launched a “HIPAA-ready” suite under Claude for Healthcare and broadened its Life Sciences tools, stepping further into medical workflows days after OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health.

The company said new connectors give clinicians and administrators faster access to core data sources, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coverage database, ICD-10 codes and the National Provider Identifier registry. Anthropic added that Claude can also draw from PubMed and scientific platforms to support literature reviews and research tasks.

On the consumer side, integrations with Apple Health, Android Health Connect, HealthEx and Function Health are rolling out in beta for Claude Pro and Max users in the US, enabling summaries of lab results, explanations of medical records and pattern detection across fitness and health metrics.

Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s chief product officer, told Bloomberg the sector is well suited for AI once compliance and data controls are handled properly. “When we think about the overall economy and where AI can have the most impact, it is really well primed for that, once you do the right things on the regulatory and data front,” he said. He added the tools are designed for “empowering people to have more knowledge, both from their data, but also in conversation with their providers.”

Anthropic said its platform includes HIPAA-ready infrastructure and that health data shared with Claude is excluded from training. The company’s acceptable use policy requires qualified professional oversight for healthcare decisions, with NBC News noting that Anthropic and peers caution their systems can make mistakes and are not substitutes for clinical judgement. NBC News also reported that ChatGPT Health is similarly positioned by OpenAI to help users understand wellness information rather than provide diagnosis or treatment.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, told NBC News the goal is to ease the burden of navigating fragmented health information. “When navigating through health systems and health situations, you often have this feeling that you’re sort of alone and that you’re tying together all this data from all these sources, stuff about your health and your medical records, and you’re on the phone all the time,” he said. “I’m really excited about getting to the world where Claude can just take care of all of that.”

Anthropic also cited early traction with providers, saying Banner Health has more than 22,000 clinical users of Claude, and highlighted expanded capabilities for clinical trial operations, regulatory submissions and coding support. Bloomberg noted Anthropic is in funding talks at a $350 billion valuation.
