Amazon announces plans to shutter three warehouses in the UK

Amazon has announced plans to shutter three UK warehouses, putting 1,200 jobs at risk.

The company is closing its centres in Doncaster, Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire and Gourock, western Scotland. Amazon said that workers from these facilities will be offered roles at other Amazon locations, though this would require them to relocate as all three centres are not within realistic commutable distance of the soon-to-close sites.

The company is preparing to open new fulfilment centres in Peddimore in the West Midlands and Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. The new locations will employ around 2,500 people.

Announcing the closures, a spokesperson for Amazon said: “[We are]committed to our customers, employees, and communities across the UK.

“We’re always evaluating our network to make sure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers. As part of that effort, we may close older sites, enhance existing facilities, or open new sites, and we’ve launched a consultation on the proposed closure of three fulfilment centres in 2023.”

Amazon last week announced plans to cut around 18,000 corporate jobs globally, while workers at the company’s Coventry warehouse are set to strike on 25 January as they demand pay of £15 per hour.
