Amazon to invest €16bn in Germany in 2027 to expand AI and digital infrastructure

Amazon has announced plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany during 2027, with the funding earmarked for AI infrastructure, cloud computing, satellite connectivity, logistics and digital content production.

The investment, unveiled at the German government's Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin, builds on more than €100 billion the technology giant says it has invested in the country since 2010.

A significant proportion of the investment will support Amazon Web Services (AWS), with €4.8 billion allocated to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region as demand for cloud and AI services continues to grow. The company said the investment would strengthen infrastructure supporting businesses developing AI applications and digital services.

Amazon is also opening a second robotics and artificial intelligence research laboratory in Berlin, doubling its research footprint in the city. The facility will recruit applied scientists, robotics hardware and software engineers, and systems engineers to develop automation technologies for the company's fulfilment operations.

As part of the wider investment programme, Amazon will continue developing its Amazon Leo low-Earth-orbit satellite broadband network, designed to deliver high-speed internet connectivity to underserved communities. The company has secured 24 launches with European launch provider Arianespace.

The company is also expanding its logistics network, with new fulfilment centres in Zweibrücken and Könnern, alongside the modernisation of existing facilities in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund, Werne, Koblenz, Pforzheim and Rheinberg. The projects are expected to create more than 3,000 jobs.

Amazon said it now employs more than 40,000 permanent staff in Germany and operates more than 100 sites across the country.

The investment package also includes new German productions for Prime Video, with more than 15 original titles planned by the end of 2027, alongside continued investment in local production companies.

David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer, said: "Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe. That is why we have invested more than €100 billion here since 2010, and why we plan to invest an additional €16 billion in 2027. We want German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow."

Katherina Reiche, Germany's federal minister for economic affairs and energy, described the announcement as "a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future."

She added: "High-performance data centres are the foundation of the digital economy. With the data wealth of our industry, we also have the potential to become a global leader in industrial AI. These are exactly the kinds of investments we need: they strengthen Germany's position in international technology competition and create value and jobs in the process."
