AWS buys encrypted messaging platform Wickr

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced it has bought software company Wickr.

Wickr, founded in 2012, has its own end-to-end encrypted messaging technology.

AWS said that public sector customers currently use the platform to securely communicate with office-based employees, while enterprise users use the technology to keep communications between employees and business partners private.

“The need for this type of secure communications is accelerating,” said Stephen Schmidt, vice president and chief information security officer for AWS. “With the move to hybrid work environments, due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, enterprises and government agencies have a growing desire to protect their communications across many remote locations.”

Schmidt added that users benefit from advanced security features “not available with traditional communication services.”

“This gives security conscious enterprises and government agencies the ability to implement important governance and security controls to help them meet their compliance requirements,” he claimed.

AWS is offering Wickr services effective immediately.
